What an intranet is for
An intranet is the internal home for how your organization works: onboarding guides, policies, team pages, news, templates and how-to articles. Only signed-in staff can see it, and different teams often have their own spaces.
What a knowledge base is for
A knowledge base or help center publishes answers outside the organization: product documentation, FAQs, troubleshooting and guides for clients. It may be public, or limited to signed-in clients.
| Intranet | Knowledge base | |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Your own team | Clients, partners or the public |
| Typical content | Policies, onboarding guides, team pages and news | Documentation, FAQs, troubleshooting and release notes |
| Access | Signed-in staff only | Public, or restricted per site |
Where they overlap
A support team writes an internal guide to fixing a common problem. A client asks the same question, so the guide is copied into the help center. Six months later the two versions disagree. Overlap is normal; copying is the problem.
One source, two audiences
The fix is to write once and publish to each audience from the same source, with access set per site: team-only, password-protected, signed-in clients or public. Perspectiv Knowledge hub works that way for both, and it is in the Q2 2027 private beta.
Keeping either one current
- Give every page an owner
- Set a review date, and act on it
- Archive rather than leave stale pages up
- Make search good enough that people stop asking in chat
How Perspectiv helps

Questions
Is a wiki the same as an intranet?
Close. A wiki is a way of writing and linking pages; an intranet is the internal site where those pages, news and team spaces live.
Should a help center be public?
It depends on the content. Product documentation is often public; client-specific guides are better limited to signed-in clients.
